Software updates “fix” things, or at least that’s the intent. Unfortunately, the adage, “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet” often applies when updates are applied. Case in point, a recent set of Microsoft Updates broke all the Office 365 apps on my PC, from OneNote to Word and everything in between. After trying to start OneNote, the message displayed is innocent enough…
Then the bad news is delivered.
Trying Excel produces the same result.
Luckily, the fix is fairly straightforward. Begin in Settings – Apps, scroll down the list until your Microsoft Office 365 version displays. Click the entry, then click the Modify button. Click Yes to elevate when prompted.
The repair screen displays. Great! There’s even a quick option, who wouldn’t choose that first? Select Quick Repair, then click the Repair button.
Click Repair one more time.
Unfortunately, Quick Repair provides disappointing results.
Time to go big or go home. Click Close. Highlight your Microsoft Office 365 version again. Click the entry, then click the Modify button. Click Yes to elevate when prompted. Select Online Repair, then click the Repair button.
Click Repair one more time, then relax while special things happen inside the computer.
Encouraging messages confirm good things are happening.
When prompted, click Close to exit the Online Repair.
No more errors starting Office apps! However, you will most likely need to reconfirm your Microsoft Account information, verifying your license to use O365.
Click Next, then hurry up and wait some more.
In a few moments, the Product Activated screen displays. Click OK.
Close the Office app you opened, then reopen it and everything should once again work as expected!
Office is a daily staple for many. When it breaks, no need to panic. Follow the simple steps above and get back up and running in no time.
